one more thing you could consider is "an Iron Hull with aWooden Deck".
many nations still used War ships with wooden decks even upto and during WWII, texturing the decks of your ships to resemble wood could make them look more steam punkish and it will also break up the lines so when your in game and in a dogfight with mulitiple ships they wont look like gray blobs that are zooming past you all over the place,
it will also help give the player a point of refrence to help prevent them from becoming disorientated when they are flying around in a fighter and the light to dark brown of the wooden deck would contrast nicely with the greys of the hull making the ships more inpresionabel on players so they can remember them if they see another picture and go "hey i remember that, its from Unchained"
